Alpaca Fiber Designs, a new and innovative environmentally friendly felting business opened its doors February, 2014. A project sponsored by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities and supported by UCP of Central Pennsylvania and in collaboration with Bent Pine Alpaca Farm, Alpaca Fiber Designs is created to employ individuals with disabilities and non-disabled employees who share a common interest; Alpacas as well as the love of animals!
Throughout the United States customized employment is the desired work outcome for people with disabilities. Through the use of customized employment the jobs are matched to a person’s interest, skills and strengths. This will also be an ideal job for those who enjoy being creative and working with fibers and their hands. What a perfect opportunity, a match made in Alpaca heaven!!
Dana Shick, a young woman, has had a life-long passion for working and being with animals. She has been riding horses since age 6 and volunteering at a local dog kennel. And of course, volunteering at Bent Pine Alpaca Farm for over 5 years. She knits scarves out of the Alpaca yarn and had sold them at the PA State Farm Show and Bent Pine Alpaca Farm gift shop. A favorite Alpaca activity is walking “Samson.”
Dana’s other passion is art and craft-making. She had taken Art classes throughout her years at Cumberland Valley High School. What started, as “you know Dana needs a job next year,” has turned into an opportunity for Dana to pursue her dreams and goals. This business will expand to include additional employees and venture into other market places to sell our products.
Alpaca Fiber Designs is owned by Dana Shick, her parents, Lynn and Glenn Shick, and the owners of Bent Pine Alpaca Farm, Doris and Darwin Kell.
The Alpaca Fiber Designs is a project of The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, fiscal sponsor.
